“My work deals with absurdity, dumbness, disenchantment, cult and decay. I am interested in the ways television, radio, web and entertainment culture affect our social and individual identities. I am also intrigued by the position of painting among all the other forms of visual media that surrounds us, and I believe that visual art, in its institutional format, is evolving away from the general public.
I use expressive and childlike gestures, as well as alterations and destructions of painted layers to build a distorted and caricaturised portrait of the demons of our cultural time. In revealing the ”making of” that led to the final product, I wish to inform the viewer of the mixture between rational and intuitive processes that are hidden under the surface. Thus, I want the audience to be aware of the painting’s history, with the hope that a better understanding can improve the connection or the communication between the artist and the public.” – Philippe Chabot
